The Sagebrush Inn has been an art collector's dream since it was built in 1931. Art was incorporated into the walls with Howard Cook Pastels, along with Barbara Latham and Lockwood murals. A wood carving of St. Francis by Joseph Imhof, graces the massive lobby fireplace.
The Sagebrush Inn collection currently is a vast array of various mediums. Oil paintings, pastels, woodcarvings, authentic Navajo rugs, sculptures, Bultos, Retablos, drums and pottery are all represented. Carmen Velarde who built several hornos at the Smithsonian in traditional style completed all the massive adobe fireplaces in the Los Vaqueros Dining room and in the Conference Center.
Throughout the hotel are major works by Rory Wagner, Ray Vinella, Walt Gonske, Bob Daughters, Mike Desatnick, Julian Robles, Miguel Martinez, John Franklin, Jim Wagner, R.C. Gorman, A. Kelly Pruitt, Ernesto Zapeda, P.G. Jensen, Douglas Ricks, Rod Goebel, Big Bow and others.
Internationally known artist, Georgia O'Keeffe painted and stayed at the Sagebrush during the 1930's. Her studio was what is now room 301. Windows surround the room. It is the only third story room on the premises. It is one of the many charming rooms the Sagebrush Inn has to offer.
Mr. Kenneth Blair purchased the Sagebrush Inn in 1974 from Mr. Myron Vallier. Six original doors hand carved by Barella for the Sagebrush were removed then. An example of one of the original six doors is in the Millicent Rogers' Museum. Mr. Blair was inspired by Vallier's collection and wanting the Sagebrush Inn to remain as a classic venue of southwestern art he has succeeded by assembling this diverse collection.
